Da-Lata make bags and accessories from recycled ring pulls. These come from cans that are collected from the sunny Brazilian beaches and bars by a small army of people known as ‘catadores’ (Brazilian for ‘can pickers’). Waste picking is an official occupation supported by the Brazilian government. “Over 91% of soda cans in Brazil were recycled last year. This is equivalent to around 1.4 million cans per hour, making Brazil a world leader in recycled aluminium.” Da-Lata buy the ring pulls from catadores and work directly with Brazilian women artisans who select, clean and flatten them to make them safe and comfortable to wear before linking them with crochet techniques.
