Fashion items crafted from old t-shirts by Nunalab
Nunalab is the brainchild of Ursula Alvarez and Mariela Bazan. Their collection of fashion and home accessories are handmade by more than seventy Peruvian artisans using upcycled cotton jersey collected from t-shirt factories around Lima. They work with small strips of fabric using techniques such as crochet, knitting and macramé. Nunalab also work with other recycled materials such as phone wire, shoelace and cottons, always with an aim to fuse traditional craft with modern design through responsible production. Nunalab’s endeavours have been recognized by buyers such as Jenny Krauss in the US and Qunuq in Holland. Working with the National Director of Handcraft’s office, they have played a key role in organising the National Competition for Artisans & Design, which recognizes innovation in design and production techniques among Peruvian artisans.
