Reclaim to Wear has been set up by Orsola de Castro, founder of the wonderful upcycled eco label From Somewhere. A design standard of excellence, RTW strives to facilitate connections between designers, retailers and the textile industry to help ensure pre-consumer textile waste is reused in innovative ways. It also helps to put production systems in place so that textile surplus is addressed, organised and allocated, preventing it’s journey to landfill.
One recent collaboration had a prestigious panel of judges come to London’s Central St Martins to critique upcycled capsule collections by second year BA students in Fashion with Marketing, Fashion Print, Knitwear Design and Communication and Promotion. Ten teams had to make one catwalk piece and two commercial pieces using fashion industry surplus such as stock, remnants and offcuts.
The winning team OR/AND (pictured above) created a collection inspired by Orlando, the Virginia Woolf character who belongs to no specific time or gender. Students work will be showcased at Estethica at London Fashion Week.
