Dishoom Chowpatty Beach

If you’re heading down to the South Bank this weekend, be sure to check out Dishoom Chowpatty Beach. As part of the Festival of Britain the Covent Garden Indian restaurant Dishoom has opened a Bombay style pop-up cafe outside the South Bank Centre.  The cafe has been designed jugaad-style. ‘Jugaad’ is hindi for making do, reusing or creative improvisation (aka upcycling). They’ve used brightly coloured barrels for stools, reclaimed railway sleepers as bench seating on the alfresco terrace, a bar made from recycled plastic bottles and walls erected using old tightly-rolled newspapers. There are even old freight pallets cladding the outside of the building.  What’s more, I hear the food is excellent!  Open until the end of September.
